How to Change Your Skincare Routine for Fall: An Esthetician's Guide

The Skin Edit  |  The Autumn Issue  |  October 2026

The Autumn Reset

Summer leaves its mark: dullness, new dark spots, a rougher texture. Then the air turns dry and the heating comes on. A Master Esthetician explains exactly how to change your skincare routine for fall, and why it's the best season of the year to repair your skin.

Written by the I'M FABULOUS COSMETICS® studio, with notes from our founder, a Master Esthetician of more than twenty years | 9 minute read

The season to repair, renew and replenish.

Every October, the same thing happens in our treatment room. Clients arrive with skin that looked wonderful in July and now feels tight after cleansing, looks a little grey under office lights, and shows a few brown spots that weren't there in spring. Nothing is wrong. Their skin is simply telling them the season has changed, and their routine hasn't.

Fall is not just the time to protect your skin from dry air. It is the best time of year to undo the summer: the sun is gentler, so the treatments that address spots and texture become far easier to use. Here is how to make the switch.

The short answer

To change your skincare routine for fall, swap to a gentler cream or milk cleanser, layer hydration under a richer moisturizer, and support your barrier against dry air and indoor heating. Then use the season to repair summer damage: add antioxidant and brightening serums for dullness and dark spots, gradually reintroduce retinol, bakuchiol or gentle peels, and add peptides to support collagen. Keep wearing SPF 30 every morning, because UV rays are still present in fall and winter. Make one change per week so your skin can adjust.

Chapter oneWhy your skin changes in the fall

The air gets drier. As humidity drops, water evaporates from the skin more quickly, a process known as transepidermal water loss. Add wind outdoors and heating indoors, and skin that was balanced in August becomes tight, flaky or suddenly sensitive.

Summer damage surfaces. The effects of months of sun often show up weeks later: new or darker spots, uneven tone, a dull surface and rougher texture. For many people, this is when the year's visible aging becomes noticeable.

Your summer routine stops fitting. The foaming cleanser, light gel and daily exfoliating toner that kept skin fresh in the heat can now strip it.

“Summer is for protection. Fall is for correction.”

Chapter twoYour fall skincare swaps

Eyes, neck, lips Often forgotten Daily: these areas dry out first

Chapter threeFall is correction season

With less intense sun and fewer days at the beach, fall is the ideal moment to address what summer left behind.

Dullness and uneven tone

Antioxidants and brightening ingredients restore radiance. Our NAD+ Resveratrol Collagen Serum combines NAD+, niacinamide, resveratrol and vitamin C to wake up tired, sun-weary skin.

Texture and dark spots

This is the season to bring back renewal. Reintroduce retinol or a gentler alternative gradually (our bakuchiol vs. retinol guide will help you choose), and consider a series of peels now rather than in spring. Explore brightening treatments in our serum collection.

Lost firmness

Sun exposure breaks down collagen. Peptides help support skin that looks firmer and smoother. GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Serum is our cornerstone for evening repair.

Chapter fourYour fall routine, morning and night

In the morning, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, apply a hydrating serum to damp skin, follow with NAD+ Resveratrol Collagen Serum, tap Super Peptide Eye Serum around the eyes, moisturize, and finish with SPF 30 or higher on the face, neck and chest.

In the evening, this is the ritual we recommend:

  1. Cleanse. A cream or oil cleanser to remove sunscreen and makeup without stripping.
  2. Hydrate. Hyaluronic acid on slightly damp skin.
  3. Repair. GHK-Cu Copper Peptide Serum on the face and neck. On retinoid nights, alternate or apply your retinoid as directed.
  4. Eyes. Super Peptide Eye Serum, tapped along the orbital bone.
  5. Seal. Peptide Collagen Repair Cream, carried down the neck. On very dry nights, add a thin extra layer to cheeks.

Chapter fiveFive fall skincare mistakes

Changing everything at once. Introduce one new product per week so you know what your skin loves, and what it doesn't.

Dropping sunscreen. UVA rays, which contribute to aging and dark spots, are present all year and pass through clouds and windows.

Over-exfoliating dry skin. Flakes are often a sign of dehydration, not dead skin. Hydrate first; exfoliate gently and less often.

Long, hot showers. Hot water strips natural oils. Keep it lukewarm and moisturize within a few minutes of drying off.

Forgetting the neck, hands and lips. They have fewer oil glands and show dryness and age first.

The questions we're asked mostFall skincare, answered

How should I change my skincare routine for fall?

Switch to a gentler cleanser, layer hydration under a richer moisturizer, and protect your barrier from dry air. Then use the season to repair summer damage with antioxidants, brightening serums, peptides and a gradually reintroduced retinoid. Keep using SPF daily.

When should I switch my skincare from summer to fall?

When humidity drops and you first notice tightness after cleansing, usually late September or October. Make changes gradually, one product per week.

Why does my skin get dry in the fall?

Lower humidity, wind and indoor heating increase water loss from the skin. Without more hydration and barrier support, skin becomes tight, flaky and more sensitive.

Is fall a good time to start retinol?

Yes. With less intense sun exposure, fall is an ideal time to start or restart retinol. Begin two to three nights a week, use a moisturizer, and wear SPF every morning. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative for sensitive skin.

Is fall the best time for a chemical peel?

For most people, yes. Peeled skin is more sun-sensitive, so the lower UV intensity and time spent indoors in fall and winter make recovery easier. Always use SPF afterward.

Do I need sunscreen in fall and winter?

Yes. UVA rays, which contribute to aging and dark spots, are present year-round and pass through clouds and windows. Use SPF 30 or higher every morning.

How do I fade dark spots from summer?

Combine brightening ingredients such as vitamin C and niacinamide, gentle renewal from a retinoid or peels, and strict daily sunscreen. Most spots visibly fade over 8 to 12 weeks of consistent care.

Make this your best-skin season.
